Looking for a trail tour with a difference? Keen to cool off during the warmer months? Well Lance Turnley from TRAIL ZONE was lucky enough to achieve both when he was invited to join all the action and fun on the latest Coffs Harbour Detour Raft & Ride tour.
The Coffs Harbour Detour HQ is situated within the Oran River valley just outside Coffs and is run by northern NSW dirt-bike legend Greg 'Boris' Everson, who has built up a wealth of knowledge of the area after growing up in Dorrigo and spending thirty of his forty years riding and exploring trails in that region.
Boris and his wife Sandy have developed Coffs Harbour Detour into a top operation that is leading edge in guided trail tours, running a variety of one-day to two, three and five day rides to suit the varying levels of riders. Boris can balance a ride between challenging single-track and fast, flowing forest roads and has the ability to gauge a group of riders and identify a ride to suit and deliver the goods that will keep a smile on the their faces for quite some time.
Lance tells how the first night was spent in Boris’s newly expanded barn where a really comfortable night’s sleep was enjoyed after an entertaining evening, kicking back a couple of coldies and declaring the barn a 'bloke zone' where discussions about politics, beer and stories of previous rides and triumphs were blown out of all proportions.
Next morning, Boris had everyone up bright and early preparing their bikes for the big adventure ahead. Before the group got the chance to start banging ends of their bars against trees along the narrow tracks, Boris was called upon to pull out his tool box to assist one of the riders whose bike had stopped twice for the second time in 500m, something that Lance didn’t have to worry about as he was set up perfectly for the conditions and having a ball on Boris’s personal WR250F.
The riders were treated to yummy scones with cream and a selection of tea, coffee, soft drinks and fruit at morning smoko before refuelling and heading on to some awesome riding.
After lunch Lance found himself getting well and truly into the zone on Boris’s "POCKET ROCKET" WR250F and remarked "I couldn’t remember riding a bike that felt so sure footed. It just turned where I wanted it to go and never once got out of shape."
The following morning riding gear was swapped for boardies and T-shirts for the nine kilometre rafting adventure down the Nymboida River. While the group waited to be picked up by the rafting operations, some rather amusing antics went on amongst the boys and you must read Lance’s humorous account of all the fun.
Lance was fortunate enough to be able to accompany Boris in a two-man inflatable canoe, allowing him to get ahead of the others and get plenty of photos of the carnage. Some years ago, Boris used to own his own rafting tour business which reassured Lance with the knowledge of being in safe hands.
The ensuing nine kilometre paddle down the river provided everyone with plenty of action, excitement and absolute fun with heaps of interesting wildlife to observe, every rapid offered the group new challenges and certainly an adventure not to be missed.
We at Club Y will be looking forward to joining Boris and his crew later this year in one of his Coffs Harbour Detour Ride and Raft adventures and we hope you will join us.
